if obama decides to choose her as the next secretary of state. she's the ambassador to u.n. she's not in charge of intelligence and not in charge of intelligence reports. it is simultaneously true they scrub the reports she got of any al qaeda mention. that was probably done within the intelligence community herself. her job as u.n. ambassador was to tell what that intelligence report said on the sunday shows and that's what she did. i don't think there's any reason to disqualify her based on anything that's happened in the last year. and, frankly, i guess i'd cut her a little slack for some of the political attacks she's taken. i guess i don't agree with graham and mccain on this one. but if you're going to be a diplomat, you should probably be diplomatic all the way around. ( laughter ) you're going to come in for a little criticism. >> benghazi has almost taken on a yalta fascination, who lost china. it seems to-- there's no question there are legislate questions about yet security was so inadequate, but the idea that this was some master conspiracy hatched in some foreign

, it just adds to these continuing layers of a narrative. if we are to expect that the u.n. ambassador, potentially the future secretary of state didn't have access and wasn't involved in discussions five days on from the attacks talking about the scenario of the terrorists the fact that there was no protest she talked about sunday morning show, then we have a serious problem. >> the picture in your head is she is handed a packet of paper. she reads it over, says thank you and goes and delivers it to the media. is that how it works? there is some sort of briefing, it's more than papers there is a discussion about what happened in which someone that is going to be the secretary of state should ask questions. correct? >> right. absolutely much the idea that somehow, you know, she slipped one page briefing memo with some talking points that by the way have been edited constantly apparently since the cia produced the basic intelligence, the raw intelligence from the field talking about what had been happening, it doesn't add up. and nothing happens in washington, you know, in a bubble. it'

.s. ambassador to the u.n. thank you for joining us, first of all. >> glad to be with you. >> heather: i want to get your reaction, first off with the latest developments coming from egypt along with the call from the judges, we also have a call from the opposition leader mohammed el baradei saying there will be no dialog with the president until the new powers are rescinded. what do you think is happening? >> well, what we've got here is not exactly a rule of law situation coming unglued. the judges have been very political actors, morsi looks at them as the people who involui invalidated the egyptian parliament and muslim brotherhood and radical islamicists. what we've got here is competition between basically illegitimate groups who hold power and that's what this struggle is about. >> heather: do you see a potential for a civil war between the groups to break out? >> i don't think that mohamed el baradei represents many people nor do the judges. what the judges reflect is that portion of the population that thought hosni mubarak's regime brought stability to the country and that's why the

's the attack against the u.s. consulate in benghazi. republican lawmakers have accused u.n. ambassador susan rice of providing false information after she appeared on the sunday shows days later saying the incident was spontaneous. this week, rice defended herself. >> when discussing the attacks against our facilities in benghazi, i relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community. >> now, rice has come under so much scrutiny, in part because she's been discussed as a possible replacement for secretary of state hillary clinton. senator john mccain and other republicans are not satisfied by rice's answers. they are calling for a select committee investigation. now, as for the fiscal cliff, if lawmakers can't agree to a deal by the first of the year, economists say eventually the country could slip back into another recession. erica? >> so many people focused on that date. thank you. >>> at 17 minutes past the hour, here's carl. >> today authorities are looking into that horrific thanksgiving day pile-up in texas that involved at least 140 people. two
